We don’t write a lot of food and restaurant reviews on this site. Unlike Disney bloggers, we only have one table service restaurant located inside a theme park in the entirety of the Pacific Northwest. Still, there are occasional opportunities to do so. In this case, it’s for one we’ve previously raved about in the past – Meltz Extreme Grilled Cheese. They started offering Sunday Brunch a couple of years ago and we finally got a chance to try it. Here we’ll share menu details, photos, thoughts, and how best to incorporate this into a visit to Silverwood or Scarywood.

If you’ve followed us, even occasionally over the past 10-ish years, you’ll know that we unapologetically love Meltz in Coeur d’Alene. If we’re anywhere within an approximate 75-mile radius of this place, we will find a reason to make a side trip to get a meal here. Seriously, we’ve made some questionable decisions to visit, including missing kids’ sports events, and driving at sometimes-obscene hours of the day/night to make it work. To call it an obsession would be a mild understatement; we clearly have a problem. We make no apologies!
Meltz is absolutely one of the best places to eat in the CDA area. It’s earned numerous awards and is not to be missed. We dive into all the details in our previous review of their standard menu, so there’s no need to rehash all of that again. Suffice to say, we love it, and have yet to try a sandwich there that we didn’t love.

Naturally, when they announced a few years ago that they were offering a new Brunch menu, we were very excited. Unfortunately, it’s only available on Sundays between 10am and 2pm. We’re rarely in the CDA area during their regular hours, let alone during these limited Sunday hours.
As such, it took a while before an opportunity presented itself, but it finally did a few months ago. We found ourselves in the Spokane area for a youth hockey tournament whose final game was early on Sunday morning. Meltz would be a mere 45-minute drive once the buzzer sounded, and that was all the excuse we needed. Our wait was finally over, and oh was it ever worth it!

The menu isn’t massive, and changes occasionally, but the staples here are the Montecristo Monster, the Eggz Benedict, and the Gut Bomb. We’ve tried all three, so we’ll share a bit about each.
The Gut Bomb is exactly what it sounds like. Think of this as an overloaded biscuits and gravy. It’s very heavy and rich, so it lives up to its name.

The Eggz Benny is, again, just as it sounds. Loaded Eggs Benedict on a cheese sandwich. It’s also fantastic and a bit lighter when compared with the other two. Overall, hard to go wrong.
Finally, we have the crown jewel: The Montecristo Monster. As die-hard fans of all things Montecristo, this had a lot to live up to. If you’re unfamiliar with a Montecristo sandwich, think of it as a mash-up of grilled cheese and French toast. It’s one of our favorite dishes at Disneyland, let alone anywhere else. Meltz has a perfect track record going for us, so this had the potential to be a match made in heaven.

And it was – we could try to sound like food bloggers here with gobs of unnecessary adjectives to try and describe this sandwich. But that’s not us. Simply put, this thing rocks in every sense of the word. It’s a Montecristo taken to the ultimate next level. On its own it’s to die for – but you also get two dipping sauces on the side – one with real maple syrup and the other with huckleberry jam. Fair warning – you will make a COLOSSAL mess while eating this, but it’s totally worth it.
Bottom line – this is yet another in a long series of sandwiches at Meltz that have no right to be as good as they are. It’s crazy the Montecristo Monster exists. It’s near criminal that it’s only available for 4 hours a week!

How does this all tie into Roller Coaster Alley? We’re a Silverwood fan site, not a food blog, right? As mentioned before, we love to throw out plugs into our tips and tricks pages about making time for Meltz, and this time of year makes for the perfect opportunity to go for their brunch: Scarywood.
Indeed, in our Scarywood 1-Night Itinerary post, we recommend Meltz as your pre-haunt fuel for an evening at the park. But if you’re there on a Saturday night, the Meltz brunch on Sunday is a great “morning after” meal when you’re done sleeping in. And you might ask – why not both? Well, that’s exactly what we did on our last visit. Dinner at Meltz before we went to the park, and brunch the next day before driving home. It was heavenly.
TL/DR: We highly recommend Meltz’s Sunday brunch if you find yourself in the area when it’s available, and a Silverwood or Scarywood trip is the perfect excuse to make it part of your plans.
